Position: Peer Education Coordinator 
Position Summary: SMYAL is seeking a highly motivated individual passionate about HIV/STD prevention and promoting leadership in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth! This full-time exempt position implements all aspects of SMYAL’s peer education program, which is designed to empower a cohort of LGBTQ youth to be peer educators and facilitate HIV/STD prevention workshops for other youth at SMYAL’s youth center and throughout DC. Peer educators will also co-facilitate weekly discussion groups with peer educators at SMYAL’s youth center.   
Position Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinates implementation of peer education program, including working with Programs Director to adapt curriculum for LGBTQ youth, developing plans for weekly program sessions, and facilitating training sessions for peer educators.
  • Works with peer educators to coordinate outreach for peer education program, including online and print advertising campaigns, conducting outreach at local schools and in community venues, and building and maintaining relationships with other community providers.
  • Co-facilitates weekly peer educator-led discussion groups at SMYAL’s youth center and other peer education programming as scheduled. 
  • Coordinates implementation of SMYAL’s DC Department of Health grant for peer education, including following SMYAL and DOH protocols and procedures to implement the grant, ensuring quality assurance and evaluation, and collecting all necessary data.
  • Works with peer educators to plan and implement 10 small-scale outreach events during the program year. 
  • Ensures all youth participating in peer education program are referred to other services at SMYAL and through community partners including HIV CTR, STD screening, substance abuse services, and Hepatitis screening.
  • Coordinates volunteer and youth leader involvement in peer education program.
  • Represents SMYAL at community events to recruit prospective volunteers and outreach to prospective youth.
  • Submit required internal SMYAL and external agency reports in a timely manner
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in social work, psychology, public health, related field and/or experience in working with youth. 
  • 1-3 years of experience in working with adolescents required; experience in working with underserved adolescents highly desired.
  • Experience in working with LGBTQ youth and youth of color, and knowledge of youth development framework highly desired.
  • Experience in facilitating peer education and/or peer leadership programming highly desired.
  • Knowledge of HIV/AIDS and STD prevention required. 
  • Must be a strong team player with experience in working collaboratively with other staff, volunteers, youth leaders, and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to manage multiple tasks/responsibilities well and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be sensitive to issues of diversity, including race, class, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity.
