Executive Director
Native to the Washington, DC metro area, Andrew first became involved with SMYAL as a volunteer before joining the staff in summer of 2005. In addition to his work at SMYAL, Andrew has been involved with several Amnesty International volunteer groups, most recently serving as an Assistant Group Coordinator for DC OUTfront, a group focused on addressing LGBT human rights issues around the world. Andrew received his B.A. from The Evergreen State College.
Development Specialist
Jonathon joined the SMYAL staff as Development Specialist in March 2008. Jonathon’s professional experience includes working as a Development Associate for the Dance Institute of Washington. He has assisted in raising funds for numerous local organizations serving the needs of the Washington, DC metro area community. Jonathon holds a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Arts and Cultural Administration and minor in Business Management.
Health Program Manager
Leandrea is a native Washingtonian and joined the SMYAL staff
in January 2006. Prior to becoming a member of the SMYAL
team, Leandrea worked as a Disaster Assistance Case Specialist
for the Department of Homeland Security assisting disaster victims
world wide to obtain housing and financial assistance, as well
as medical and other emergency needs. Leandrea has always
been an active supporter of the LGBTQ community having served
on the Board of Directors for Transgender Health Empowerment (THE).
Leandrea is eager to apply her expertise to further serve LGBTQ
youth and support the mission of SMYAL.
HIV Prevention Coordinator
Tyrone Hanley has served as a Youth Program Co-Coordinator for the Gender Public Advocacy Coalition and as an AmeriCorps volunteer with the National AIDS Fund at Helping Individual Prostitutes Survive (HIPS). Tyrone has volunteered with a number of other local organizations, including DC OUTfront (an Amnesty International action team), the Children's National Medical Center's Outreach Program for Gender-Variant Children, and Men Can Stop Rape. He also serves as President of Youth Pride Alliance. Tyrone graduated from the University of Richmond with a degree in Sociology.
Leadership and Community Development Coordinator
Linsey started as a volunteer with SMYAL in March 2008 and joined the staff in July. Linsey received her Bachelor of Sciences in Anthropology and Communications from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. She then received a Master of Arts in Special Education from American University in Washington, DC. Linsey also participated in the Teach For America program and enjoyed teaching special education for DC Public Schools. During her time with DCPS, Linsey was a member of the Safe, Orderly, and Caring Schools committee, created an after-school tutoring program for students with special needs, and founded For the Love of Words, a hip hop creative arts group. Her other recent youth work includes serving as a high school Crew Leader for the Student Conservation Association.
Operations Specialist
Gerald joined the SMYAL staff as Operations Specialist in October 2007. Gerald has graduated from American University, Washington DC in 2005 with a degree on International Studies – Peace and Conflict Resolution. After graduation, he has worked for the Institute of International Finance in Washington DC, as Administrative Assistant of the Emerging Markets Department until he joined SMYAL. Gerald is originally from Lima, Peru and has lived in the US since 2001. He works at the same time as an actor in Teatro de la Luna (The Moon Theatre) and sings in the International Show Band Armonia Latina.
Director of Development
Kelly joined the SMYAL staff as Director of Development in June 2007. Kelly's recent professional experience includes serving as the Events Manager for People For the American Way Foundation and the Director of Development for the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association, both located in Washington, DC. Born and raised in Connecticut, Kelly holds a degree from George Mason University in Government and International Politics. She has been actively involved in the LGBT nonprofit community for seven years.
