
Brotherhood University
Brotherhood University is SMYAL's HIV prevention intervention for young men of color who sleep with men funded by theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention. We use the proven effective DEBI (Diffusion of Effective Behavioral Intervention) "Many Men, Many Voices," which was designed to address the unique challenges men with dual identities of gay or bisexual and black or Latino face.
Using this model for our youth population, we lead discussions about racism, homophobia, identity, and sexual behavior to promote positive self-images and healthy behavior change. We conduct the program in a retreat format in a location two hours away from DC, which allows our youth the opportunity to escape their everyday lives and focus on the larger issues they face.
Community Partners
SMYAL works with community partners Us Helping Us to provide this intervention to older youth ages 21 - 24 and independent evaluator Health Education and Resources Services (HERS) to ensure our interventions are effective and produce positive behavior change.For more information about our Brotherhood University program, contact:
