

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE:
The
2009 Youth Leadership conference offers an opportunity for LGBTQ and
straight
ally youth to learn how to be leaders in their communities and advocate
for the
equal rights and treatment of LGBTQ people. This event is for youth
ages 13 to 21. Youth over 21 can volunteer for the event. Breakfast,
lunch, and dinner will be provided. There will be a dance following the
conference from 6pm to 9pm. Everything is free. Register online now
before the conference is full!
WORKSHOPS:
Communication Skills - Develop public speaking and active listening skills.
Employment Readiness - Learn to enhance your resume, find your dream job, and stand out in an interview.
College/Intern Readiness - Learn
best practices for applying to college, tips on selecting and LGBTQ
friendly school, and internships available to college students.
Know Your Rights - Learn about the laws and policies that protect you from discrimination and harassment and how you can stand up for yourself.
Defend Yourself - Identify harassment and learn self-defense techniques.
LGBT Advocacy - Learn how you can be an advocate in your community and at your school.
L-G-B-T Diversity Panel - Discussion about the intersection of gender, ethnicity, race, and class within the LGBTQ community.

Youth 13-21 can register as a conference participant or volunteer by downloading the application and returning to SMYAL by mail at 410 7th St Se, Washington, DC or by e-mailing the completed for to linsey.mayhew@smyal.org.
