Little SMYALs

Little SMYALs has gone virtual! In order to attend this month’s groups, you must reserve your spot ahead of time! You will need a phone, iPad, computer, etc. with access to the internet in order to participate. Youth can join with video, audio, or via chat. We recommend joining with both video and audio, to most closely mimic our in-person groups.

When: The second Wednesday of the month and the last Saturday of the Month, 10-11am

Where: In a private, Zoom-hosted room. Link provided upon registration.

Who’s running it?: Addison Moore (After-School Programs Coordinator), and Rebecca York (Community Engagement & Youth Leadership Manager), and Samia Lalani (Assistant Director of Programs)

One parent/ caregiver must be available for the first 5 minutes of the virtual program. This is primarily to help your child adjust to the virtual platform, but also to assist with any technical issues that may arise! SMYAL staff will also be able to answer any of your questions at this time.

Click HERE to register your child for our upcoming meetings. You’ll receive a copy of the Zoom link once you register. There is no cap to registration, and you can register a young person up until the group begins.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We have compiled a masterlist of resources for parents and caregivers. Check our Resources page for updates.

In the wake of the national uprisings in defense of Black lives, SMYAL has decided to form racial affinity groups for queer and trans youth who identify as Black, non-Black people of color, and white people, respectively. Affinity groups have long been upheld as key educational tools for young people experiencing marginalization, to connect with others, build support systems, and find empowerment. GSA’s (Gender & Sexuality Alliances, or Gay/ Straight Alliances) are examples of affinity groups used to center the experiences of young queer and trans people in an effort to build a safer and more inclusive community.

SMYAL’s affinity groups aim to do the same work of creating safe community and education spaces for Black youth looking for healing and community, and their non-Black youth allies.

Youth who self-identify as Black will enter the Black youth affinity group to find support and healing with their peers. Youth who identify as a non-Black person of color will have the opportunity to join the Non-Black POC group that will be half support space, half educational space to begin understanding and unpacking anti-Blackness in other communities of color. Likewise youth who self-identify as white will enter the white affinity group, which will focus on providing an educational space for white youth to share resources, unpack their racism and dismantle their anti-Blackness.

The white affinity group will have an open curriculum fort transparency.

Trans and Non-Binary Affinity Group

Trans and non-binary youth ages 13-24 are invited to a TGNC-only support space to find community and have open conversations about dysphoria, medical transition, navigating family and relationships, access to healthcare, and other topics that are not always openly discussed.

This group is led by trans and non-binary SMYAL staff.

When: 2nd and last Tuesday of the Month, 5:30-6:30 pm

Ages: 13-24
