Support & Solidarity Spaces for Queer and Trans Youth
In the wake of the national uprisings in defense of Black lives, SMYAL has decided to form racial affinity groups for queer and trans youth who identify as Black, non-Black people of color, and white people, respectively. Affinity groups have long been upheld as key educational tools for young people experiencing marginalization, to connect with others, build support systems, and find empowerment.
Youth who self-identify as Black will enter the Black youth affinity group to find support and healing with their peers. Youth who identify as a non-Black person of color will have the opportunity to join the Non-Black POC group that will be half support space, half educational space to begin understanding and unpacking anti-Blackness in other communities of color. Likewise, youth who self-identify as white will enter the white affinity group, which will focus on providing an educational space for white youth to share resources, unpack their racism and dismantle their anti-Blackness.
Each group will be hosted t the same time in separate Zoom breakout rooms.
Zoom is available on computers, smartphones, and cell phones. It will allow you to either video chat, call-in, or type responses.
