Camp Free2Be Access & Inclusion

Camp Free2Be Celebrates ALL parts of who you are!

We know that our campers come from different backgrounds and are at different points in their journeys as LGBTQ+ youth. Camp Free2Be and SMYAL are committed to ensuring that the spaces we create are accessible, inclusive, and foster belonging so youth feel seen and safe. This is why staff have worked hard to make programs and activities that everyone can participate in.

Questions about what that entails? We have answers below!

Frequently Asked Questions

What does support look like for neurodivergent youth?

  • Solidarity from other neurodivergent campers and staff with shared experiences
  • Quiet/sensory-friendly room available throughout the day
  • Visual schedules and routines
  • Lots of options of ways to participate
  • Noise-cancelling headphones and fidget toys
  • Training for all staff on affirming approaches to working with neurodiverse youth

How is SMYAL making camp inclusive for BIPOC youth?

  • Affinity Groups for BIPOC youth to connect, hosted by BIPOC queer staff who share similar identities and experiences
  • Programs that highlight and celebrate BIPOC trans history and culture
  • Racial Justice Training for all staff to reduce unconscious bias and build racial sensitivity
  • An Access Fund to reduce additional financial barriers

How is camp accessible for youth with disabilities?

  • Inclusion Staff: Each session we contract an Inclusion Lead, whose sole job at camp is to ensure that all campers have access to the day’s activities. They work with program leaders and campers to find the best ways to adapt and accommodate campers of all abilities.
  • Pre-Camp Inclusion Meetings: Inclusion staff offer a pre-camp video call with families who would like to discuss their camper’s individual needs and create a plan for success at Camp Free2Be.
  • Mobility Access: Our primary entrance has an ADA accessible ramp. There is an elevator with direct access to our programming space.
  • Note: We go outside to a field for one hour in the afternoon. We always have an indoor option available as well.
  • Nut-free space
  • ASL interpretation during session 1

How is SMYAL helping low-income families access camp?

  • Camp registration is 100% free! This includes all five days of activities, snacks, and a camp t-shirt. (Note: We do not have the capacity to serve lunch at Camp Free2Be, so campers should pack a lunch)
  • Although Junior Counselors are all volunteers, for any counselors who able to support both sessions, we offer a stipend of $150
  • Access Fund: Although camp is free to attend, we know that there are outside costs associated with getting to and participating in camp. To help make camp possible for everyone, we have an Access Fund available to support campers and counselors who otherwise would be unable to participate in Camp Free2Be. Funds will be granted first-come-first-serve to those who complete their Permission Forms. Funds will be distributed as gift cards. To apply for the Access Fund, please contact youthdevelopment@smyal.org.
    • Our Access Fund may be able to help cover:
      • Metro pass for two weeks
      • Uber rides to and from camp (priority usage for youth who live in SE DC and/or over .75 mi from a metro stop)
      • Packaged lunches at camp
      • Other access needs identified by the counselor/parent that would help you fully participate in Camp Free2Be

What if my child isn’t sure of their identity?

We have campers and counselors who…

  • Have never met another trans person… and those who are loud and proud LGBTQ+ advocates
  • Aren’t sure if trans is the right word for them… and those who have pronoun pins on every bag they own
  • Have known they were trans for years… and those who are still figuring out their gender identity
  • Just came out recently… and those who have been to camp for 5 years
  • Don’t know the lingo… and those who know every flag

Wherever you are on your identity journey, you belong at Free2Be!

For questions about inclusion, access, and belonging at Camp Free2Be or to apply for the Access Fund, please contact youthdevelopment@smyal.org
