Becas SMYAL

SMYAL’s scholarships recognize outstanding and unapologetic LGBTQ+ student leaders who have demonstrated personal growth and a commitment to creating change in their school or community.

These scholarships are intended to help offset the cost of continuing education and are awarded directly to recipients entering their first year of post-secondary education, which may include technical or trade school, as well as two- and four-year colleges. Funds are paid directly to the student and may be used for everything from tuition and housing, books and technology, school travel costs, or materials for your program.

Fundada en 2015, SMYAL LGBTQ+ Youth Leadership Awards (YLA) provide a total of up to $30,000 to 5-8 student leaders each year. Nombrado en honor de Sophie Magerl, Premio Live Out Loud de Sophie (LOLA) proporcionará una beca de $5000 para un líder estudiantil que encarne los valores de Sophie de autoexpresión, artes creativas, empoderamiento, resiliencia y dedicación a la comunidad. PARA SER ELEGIBLE, LOS SOLICITANTES DEBEN:

Autoidentificarse como parte de la comunidad LGBTQ+
Be 24 years old or younger
Have either attended high school or completed GED in the D.C. Metro Area*
Be starting your first semester of post-secondary education (2 or 4 year college, university, trade school, technical school etc.) by Fall 2024

¿QUÉ CUENTA COMO LIDERAZGO?

Sabemos que no todos los líderes son la voz más fuerte en la sala.

El liderazgo puede ser, pero no se limita a:

Participation in/ leadership of a school’s GSA or other student group
Apoyando a su comunidad o amigos durante la pandemia
Working in the community to increase knowledge and awareness on social, artistic, or educational issues
Involvement in social justice movements like BLM, climate action, gun control, etc.
Organizar conversaciones en una organización religiosa o comunitaria
Participación en la promoción política
Activismo artístico

Los solicitantes también deben demostrar crecimiento personal y el deseo de marcar la diferencia en el mundo.

¿QUÉ NECESITO PARA APLICAR?

Para postularse para los premios Youth Leadership Awards y el premio Sophie's Live Out Loud, necesitará:

A ensayo personal (máximo 1.500 palabras)
- Su El ensayo debe abordar el siguiente mensaje: “Tell us about your journey as LGBTQ+ leader: what obstacles have you overcome, how have you positively impacted the lives of those around you in your school or local community, and how do you hope to continue to grow in the future?”

THINGS TO CONSIDER:

Eligible applicants include graduating seniors, youth who took a gap year or two, youth who are completing a GED this Spring, etc.– as long as you are planning to start continuing education this upcoming year. Students returning to higher education (such as upperclassmen) are not eligible for this award.

We encourage all applicants to seriously consider their level of comfort being publicly out about their identities, as winners will have their picture and biography publicized.
