Emmy Knuppel (she/they/he), the first recipient of Sophie’s Live Out Loud Award, is a painter, embroidery artist, wood burning artist, sculptor, photographer, and digital illustrator whose passion for LGBTQ+ advocacy translates into visuals. As a three-year leader of the George Washington Carver Center for Arts & Technology GSA club, United, Emmy has focused on building a future for the school where all members feel heard and seen. This fall, Emmy will study Illustration at the Maryland Institute College of Art as a resident of MICA’s First Year Fellowship in Creative Entrepreneurship program. Emmy hopes to combine their love of making art with advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community in Baltimore and beyond.
