Little SMYALs is a welcoming and affirming social group for LGBTQ+ youth between the ages of 6-13.
Little SMYALs offers a safe space where young people can build community, access helpful resources, and most importantly—have fun!
Our engaging programs include fun activities like games, reading books, arts and crafts, and learning about LGBTQ+ history and culture.
We celebrate individuality and provide a positive environment for LGBTQ+ kids to be their true selves!
SMYAL’s teen and young adult programs are affirming spaces where LGBTQ+ youth ages 13-24 can build community, find support, and be themselves.
Teen and young adult programs are hosted weekly both virtually through Q Chat Space and Discord, as well as in-person at SMYAL’s Youth Center in Washington, DC.
Throughout the year, SMYAL hosts special events where LGBTQ+ youth can come together to celebrate with their community.
SMYAL’s scholarships recognize outstanding and unapologetic LGBTQ+ student leaders who have demonstrated personal growth and a commitment to creating change in their school or community.
These scholarships are intended to help offset the cost of continuing education and are awarded directly to recipients entering their first year of post-secondary education, which may include technical or trade school, as well as two- and four-year colleges.
Breaking Ground is a summer program that utilizes the theatre and performing arts to detail the lives, challenges and journeys of LGBTQ+ youth of color in the DC Metro area.
We explore in-depth issues such as HIV/AIDS, sexuality, racism, transphobia, abuse, mental health, and substance abuse. Participants then courageously develop a musical theatre production addressing these topics that directly reflect their experiences.
Through acting, singing, and dance workshops, youth develop a full length musical production based on their real life stories.
In addition to hosting community-building programs, SMYAL provides housing support for LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness and affirming mental health counseling.
