Camp Free2Be

Camp Free2Be is a week-long summer day camp for transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse youth ages 6-14.

Kids come for fun, games, songs, crafts, science, skits, LGBTQ+ history, friendships, community, and being their authentic selves!

Camp Free2Be is located in the DMV area and is hosted in partnership with Little SMYALs.

2024 Camp Sessions

We are excited to announce that this year, camp will be hosted not just one week…but TWO!

A Day at Camp

The main goal of camp is to be FREE to have FUN! And of course, we mix in a good bit of PRIDE where we can too!

MORNING MEETINGS

Each day begins with a morning meeting where we gather as a community, learn about a focus identity for the day, read a story, and sing a song.

CABINS

Following our meeting, we split into our “cabins”, small groups of campers all around the same age! This is a great way to form deeper friendships with other campers just like you!

MORNING ACTIVITY BLOCKS

Throughout the day, we rotate through activity blocks which may include arts and crafts, Pride lessons, theatre, STEM activities, etc. Some activity blocks are split by age (Honey Bees ages 6-9 and Bumble Bees ages 10-14) and some activities are camper’s choice!

LUNCH

Our first break of the day allows for open social time to play board games and build friendships.

AFTERNOON ACTIVITY BLOCKS

After lunch, we have another activity block, recess, and cooperative games– where the whole camp plays together towards a shared goal as we end the day as a large group.

Throughout the day, activities are led by our awesome staff and Senior Counselors! Each cabin is led by two Junior Counselors (trans and nonbinary youth ages 15-18) who serve as excellent role models for younger campers. We also have the support of an amazing Mental Health Counselor for campers who might need extra connection to stay engaged or support throughout the day.

We can’t wait to spend the day with you!

Camp Cost

Thanks to SMYAL’s partnership with Camp Free2Be, all campers receive FREE admission to camp! As we continue to grow, we will be able to offer so much more fun, support, and resources to our campers and teen volunteers than ever before.

Junior Counselors

Ever wanted to help create a space where trans, nonbinary, and gender-expansive youth are free to be their whole selves? Apply to be a junior counselor at Camp Free 2 Be!

We welcome trans/nonbinary/gender diverse teens ages 15-18 as volunteer junior counselors. If you would enjoy an opportunity to have fun, meet new friends, and be a role model for younger trans kids, this position is for you. Learn more about becoming a Junior Counselor here.
