Planned Giving

What will your legacy be?

Since its founding in 1984, SMYAL has served thousands of LGBTQ youth across the region due to the generous support of community members like you. The continued growth of our programs can be magnified by a gift left to SMYAL in your estate plans that will leave a long-lasting and high-level impact on our future programs for LGBTQ youth. Your commitment to supporting and empowering LGBTQ youth can be your lasting legacy.

You can support SMYAL in your estate plan by naming us as a beneficiary to a retirement account, a general gift by will or trust, insurance plan, or by donating appreciated assets like securities. Your inclusion of SMYAL in your financial plans likely costs you nothing now, can provide you with tax advantages, and creates a long-lasting impact on the lives of LGBTQ youth.

Include SMYAL in Your Retirement Plan

Retirement assets are one of the most beneficial ways you can financially support SMYAL. These funds grow tax-free until the time of withdrawal. With the innovative use of these assets, you are able to provide a generous gift to SMYAL while ensuring your loved ones are still taken care of. Many taxes on these plans can be avoided or reduced through a carefully planned charitable gift. Your retirement plan’s administrator can provide a beneficiary form for you to name SMYAL as your sole or partial beneficiary.

Create a Charitable Remainder Trust

A Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) is a life-income arrangement that provides you and/or other beneficiaries with a stream of income for life or for a period of years. After the trust terminates, the principal, or “remainder interest,” goes to the SMYAL. Unlike other life-income arrangements, CRTs are separately invested and managed trusts.

Bequests

Leave SMYAL a gift through your will or revocable living trust. You may also name SMYAL as a beneficiary by designating SMYAL as a beneficiary of your bank account, retirement and pension plan, or life insurance policy.

The following is basic sample wording to make a provision for SMYAL in your will:

I give and bequeath to the Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League, 410 7th Street, SE, Washington, DC 20003 (Federal Tax I.D. #52-1394900) DOLLAR AMOUNT or % OF MY ESTATE to be used for its general purposes.

You can also name SMYAL as the beneficiary to a retirement account (IRA, 401(k), 403(b), etc) or a life insurance plan. To do that, simply contact your plan administrator and they can help you fill out the appropriate forms.

Appreciated Assets

Donate securities (i.e., stock), personal property, real estate and insurance policies.

Talk to your legal or financial adviser to learn more about the ways in which you can include SMYAL in your estate plan. Persons over 70.5 years also have the option of directly donating from an IRA to charity by making a Qualified Charitable Distribution.
