Young donors are an important part of the SMYAL community. Each year, thousands of people in their 20s and 30s enable SMYAL to support and empower our region’s LGBTQ youth. Join this vibrant community and make a real difference in the life of a SMYAL youth.
How can you help to support SMYAL?
Currently, SMYAL has two unique programs geared toward engaging young donors. Learn more about the programs below and how you can get involved.
Become a SMYAL Ally
Launched in 2013, the SMYAL Allies program is our premier monthly giving program for younger donors. Through a recurring donation of $10, $25, or $50 a month, you can help change the lives of LGBTQ youth in the region.
Your monthly contribution can help to provide LGBTQ awareness training for teachers, social workers, or other youth services providers; fund a week's worth of after school programming at the SMYAL youth center on Capitol Hill; or support an all-day Gay-Straight Alliance Summit for 30 youth.
As an Ally you become a part of a key community of LGBTQ advocates, donors, and leaders; have access to exclusive volunteer opportunities; receive recognition on SMYAL promotional materials, website, and annual report; and if you give at the $25 or $50 monthly level you receive a nontransferrable complementary ticket to the annual Fall Brunch!
To become an Ally, donate and sign up here. Thank you for your generous support!
Join the Young Donors Committee
In 2012, SMYAL launched the Young Donors Committee, a diverse group of young professionals who work to creatively engage donors in their 20s and 30s to provide ongoing support for SMYAL and our work with LGBTQ youth. Committee members meet monthly and set their outreach and fundraising strategy, which can include hosting events, conducting outreach to their networks, and acting as representatives of SMYAL to current and prospective younger donors.
Being a part of the Young Donors Committee is a perfect opportunity for someone interested in helping to lead the charge in supporting DC’s LGBTQ youth and support the work of SMYAL.
Current Young Donors Committee members are:
- Paul Ashton
- EV Ellington
- Billy Fettweis
- Daniel Honeycutt
- Bailey Leuschen
- Brandon Nedwek
- James Reeves
- Javier Rodriguez
- Julia Saladino
- Kameron Winters
- Conrad Zeutenhorst
SMYAL accepts nominations—including self-nominations—for the Young Donors Committee on a rolling basis. The Young Donors Committee is looking for people who are self-starters and committed to SMYAL's mission. In addition to monthly evening meetings, on average committee members do approximately four – six hours of work per month to support committee goals. Ideal committee members should have excellent communication skills and be creative and flexible. Previous fundraising experience is desired but not required.
If you are interested in joining please contact the Young Donors Committee Chair, Brandon Nedwek at firstname.lastname@example.org.
